Découvrir Essaouira, ce port, autrefois nommé Mogador, votre carnet de croquis en poche, votre plus belle plume d’écrivain a la main, afin de réaliser un carnet de voyage unique, complet et emprunt de votre personnalité. Au programme de ces 6 jours, des ateliers d’écriture et de peinture en alternance, des balades dans la médina et la découverte du littoral et du monde rural des alentours. Les sujets ne manqueront pas, les contrastes et les ambiances seront diverses tout autant que les techniques graphiques. Pas d’inquiétude, Violaine sera la pour vous orienter dans le choix des sujets et fera des démonstrations sur place ! En compagnie de Loíc, poete-écrivain, vous apprendrez a jouer avec les mots, la rime, et la syntaxe. En suivant ses conseils et astuces, vous serez guidé dans l’écriture sensorielle et historique, vous serez a l’écoute de vos émotions et de vos sens pour rédiger vos textes dans un style entierement personnel

Violaine Abbatucci est née en Normandie en 1966 dans une famille oú les arts tenaient une grande place : sa mere était céramiste de métier et chef de choeur, son pere, ingénieur et musicien et son grand• pere, peintre amateur. Ce bagage familia! et culture! éveillera sa sensibilité et son appétence pour le dessin et la peinture qu’elle a appris en autodidacte. Son arrivée a Nice en 1986 a été le premier révélateur de cette vocation artistique avec la découverte des ocres du sud. Immédiatement ses carnets de croquis, jusqu’ici en noir et blanc, ont pris de la couleur. Le succes de sa prerniere exposition en 2003 l’a encouragé a faire le choix de l’artistique et depuis 2012 elle a légitimement pris sa place parmi les aquarellistes et des carnettistes professionnels. Aujourd’hui, ses oeuvres grands formats s’exposent régulierement lors de biennales d’aquarelles, et dans plusieurs galeries en France comme en Italie. « Lorsque je peins sur le motif, j’essaie d’étre au plus pres de mes sens et de mes émotions, et si le spectateur de mes oeuvres les ressent, mon but est atteint.J’ai réussi a mettre dans ma peinture non pas la réalité de ce que j’ai vu, mais la réalité de ce que je suis. »

Loic BATAILLE est né a Paris en 1972. L’écriture poétique est venue a lui en 2014, pied a pied, pour s’imposer depuis en véritable violon d’lngres. Pourtant la filiation artistique n’était pas évidente, si ce n’est, peut-étre, un goút pour les histoires venant de son pere et une initiation au merveilleux par sa mere. Le véritable déclencheur fut une chanson, Rafale de Bernard Lavilliers. Tout est la, la force des images l’emporte, sans rémission : il faut écrire ! Les mots du coeur sont autant de témoignages, écrits au fil des jours et des expériences vécues. 11 écrit de nombreux poemes, de style lyrique, au langage simple et authentique. En 2018, certains d’entre eux seront mis en scene en un spectacle de poésie, melé d’une performance picturale, interprétée par sa complice Violaine. Les textes poétiques les plus aboutis feront l’objet d’un recueil de poésies, AGAPE (a paraitre prochainement). En 2022, il signe les paroles de l’album de P Sibille, Entre deux rives et cótoie avec bonheur la puissance et l’exotisme d’une poésie devenue chant. « Avec le dernier opus vénitien, j’ai tenté de mettre l’écriture poétique au service du sens en un récit qui oscille entre réflexion et esthétisme. »

 Traditional Dishes
One of the most notable aspects of Moroccan cuisine is the emphasis on the quality and freshness of ingredients. The produce is sourced from a land free of pesticides, chemicals, hormones, or preservatives. Animals are typically slaughtered just hours before they are used, with mutton being the prevalent meat offered, rather than lamb. Market vegetables are freshly gathered each morning. The use of spices, herbs, fresh fruits, nuts, and dried fruits imparts an invigorating vitality that stands in stark contrast to the packaged and imported products commonly found in much of Europe and North America. To further acquaint you with the culinary delights, here are explanations of some of the most common and popular traditional Moroccan dishes:

  • Harira: A thick soup made of chickpeas, lentils, and haricot beans, often flavored with mutton or chicken, lemon, and tarragon.
  • Brochettes: Grilled kebabs featuring mutton, liver, and fat.
  • Kefta: Spicy meatballs crafted from minced mutton and offal, often served in a seasoned sauce.
  • Pastilla/Bastilla: A pie composed of multiple layers of flaky pastry filled with chopped pigeon meat, eggs, almonds, and spices. Chicken or fish may be used as alternatives to pigeon.
  • Tagine: Alongside couscous, this is one of the most ubiquitous Moroccan dishes—a slowly simmered stew cooked in its own juices in an earthenware bowl with a distinctive conical lid. Variants include tagine de viande (mutton stew with vegetables or served alone with prunes), tagine de poisson (bream or sardine stew with tomatoes and herbs), tagine de lapin (rabbit stew), and tagine de poulet aux olives et citron (a delicious chicken stew with lemon and olives). The lemon imparts a delightful bitter zest to the meat.
  • Mechoui: Lamb roasted whole on a spit or baked in a special oven. This delicately fragrant meat, distinct from typical mutton, is often enjoyed with bread but is considered an elaborate luxury that may need to be ordered well in advance.
  • Couscous: Made from half-baked flour ground into semolina-like grains, perfectly prepared couscous involves a meticulous cooking process with steamings and oilings, resulting in distinct granular texture. While best enjoyed in a home or a quality restaurant, it is often served with sept légumes (seven steamed vegetables) and occasional mutton. Couscous can also be served as a dessert with sugar, cinnamon, and rich, warm goat's milk. Cornes de Gazelle: Croissant-like pastries filled with honey and almonds.
Good To Know

Travelers from the US only are required to have a valid US Passport – but it must NOT be due to expire within 6 months of your return flight.

Your flight destination will be Marrakech Menara International Airport (RAK) / Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport. Royal Air Maroc is the only airline that has direct flights from the US to Morocco, from both JFK and Washington Dulles.

You can also book flights traveling through major European airports, as there are many connecting flights to Marrakech through economy airlines such as Ryan Air, Easyjet, Iberia, etc. We’ve found that it is easier to find good connecting flights on the way to Marrakech than on the return, but you can take the opportunity to end your trip with a day or two stop in Spain, France, Portugal, England….

Immunizations are not required or necessary but check here for CDC recommendations.

What To Wear

Weather is predictably unpredictable so be sure to check on the estimated conditions the week before you travel. Even though Marrakech can be quite warm by day, it is usually quite cooler at night so pack light clothes that you can layer. We recommend cotton pants, long skirts, wraps or large scarves over tank and tee shirts, and a sweater or light jacket for chilly nights.

Your most important fashion asset: comfortable shoes for traversing the Medina on sightseeing and shopping adventures!

Morocco is a Muslim country and women generally dress more modestly than in the US or Europe. Like elsewhere, dress codes are gradually becoming more lax and there is a lot of tolerance for tourists, but wearing clothing that covers your best “assets”, and that your grandmother would approve of, shows cultural respect, good taste, and common sense.

Money Exchange

The currency here is the Moroccan Dirham, and the exchange rate usually hovers these days around 10 Dirhams/1 Dollar. You CANNOT exchange for Dirhams outside of Morocco, but there are several currency exchange booths in the airport when you exit Passport Control and also located all around the Medina. Larger stores and restaurants may take Euros, but it’s really best to have dirhams.

If you bring large bills ($100) to exchange be sure that they are newer bills with holograms. Otherwise they will slide them back to you with a shake of their head.

Another good option for padding your wallet with dirhams is to use the ATM machines which are located around the medina. The exchange rate is a little better, especially if your bank or credit card doesn’t add foreign transaction fees (some homework for you). Be sure to notify your bank of your foreign travel destination so they don’t flag you for fraud. I also recommend that you bring 2 or 3 cards-just in case you still get flagged (happens!) and find too many things you just can’t live without.

When we receive your deposit we will email you to confirm your reservation and payment.​Once the retreat becomes guaranteed (5 minimum number of registrants met) we will contact you to confirm your reservation and arrange payment of the balance for the retreat if only the deposit was paid at registration.
If for any reason the retreat does not become guaranteed, you will be refunded any funds paid (deposit or total amount).

Program

Just 300 m from Jamaâ El Fna Square, this bed and breakfast offers 7 rooms. You can relax in the pool or enjoy views of the Atlas Mountains from the rooftop terrace.
The rooms combine a contemporary and Moroccan style, have an LCD TV and some of the suites feature a fireplace.
Breakfast is served every morning and Moroccan dishes are offered in the restaurant. You can also relax in the caïdale tent on the terrace or browse the free Wi-Fi in the several large living rooms.
The souks are 300 m from the riad and Marrakesh Train Station is 1 km away. Public parking is available on site and Marrakesh Menara Airport is 3 km from this bed and breakfast.

Located in Essaouira, from Golf de Mogador, the riad vertes has accommodations with an outdoor swimming pool, a garden and a shared lounge. The guesthouse has a terrace and pool views, and guests can enjoy a meal at the restaurant or a drink at the bar.

At the guesthouse, each room is equipped with a closet, bed linen and a patio with a garden view. The rooms are equipped with an electric tea pot and a private bathroom with a shower, while some rooms also feature a kitchen equipped with a fridge. At the riad vertes every room has a seating area.

Excursion dans le monde  rural,   avec le marché  aux  ánes, les fermiers et marchands d’ épices, sans oublier les vendeurs de fruits et légumes.  Une immersion totale loin des touristes  et l’occasion unique  de prendre notre  repas chez l’habitant.

Une  terrasse panoramique privatisée  nous accueille pour  la matinée.  L’occasion de prendre de la hauteur et de bénéficier  d’une  vue imprenable sur la médina et la cote.  Pause déjeuner. L’apres-midi, découverte du quartier juif, balade  artistique  au fil des rues.

Excursion cótiere vers les <lunes et plage de Sidi Kaouki,  Séances croquis et écriture. Grillades  de poissons pour  la pause  déjeuner.  L’apres-midi, visite d’une  coopérative traditionnelle d’huile  d’argan.  Croquis sur place pendant le travail  des femmes.

Le thé a la menthe nous attend  en terrasse pour  la finalisation  du carnet.  Nous serons a vos cotés pour  vos mises en page,  collages divers,  et textes bien sur.  Pause déjeuner.  L’apres-midi, quartier libre.  L’occasion  pour  vous de faire vos achats souvenirs ou une séance plaisir au hammam,

Jour 8 : Après le petit-déjeuner dans notre Riad, transfert à l’aéroport.
